The experience
The day starts at 9:00 AM with pickup from your accommodation, airport or train station in Khiva or Urgench. Your driver heads north into the flat agricultural landscape of Karakalpakstan, stopping first at cotton fields where you'll learn how farming has shaped the region's economy across generations. By mid-morning you reach Shabbaz, an agricultural hub where you taste the local melons and watermelons the Khorezm oasis is known for. The sweetness comes from the desert heat and the soil.
The archaeological sites come next. Kyzyl-Kala, built between the 1st and 4th centuries CE, sits as a massive mud-brick garrison with walls that glow reddish in the sun. A short drive brings you to Toprak-Kala, a sprawling royal capital from the 1st century that served as both residence and administrative center for Khorezmian rulers: larger and more complex than the purely defensive fortresses nearby. The contrast between these two sites shows how the region's power shifted and how different structures served different purposes across centuries.
Midday you reach Akchakul Lake, a striking blue body of water set against golden desert dunes. Lunch is served here, and afterward you have free time to swim or lie in the therapeutic desert sand. The lake sits at the edge of the Kyzylkum, and the temperature and the isolation make it feel far from any city. From there the route climbs to Ayaz-Kala, the most dramatic site of the day: three fortress complexes stacked on a desert ridge with panoramic views across the flat sands. The hike up to the 4th-century BCE plateau fortress is steep enough to feel like work, but the views from the top stretch to the horizon.
At the base of Ayaz-Kala sits a traditional yurt camp. Here you can choose to ride a Bactrian camel (the two-humped variety native to Central Asia) for an additional cost. The ride happens against the backdrop of the ancient fortress walls, which is where the Silk Road experience becomes tangible. The return drive south passes through Urgench and delivers you back to your hotel, airport or train station by early evening.
