The experience
Khiva's Ichan Kala is a labyrinth of narrow streets built into fortress walls, and a historian guide makes the difference between walking past the tile work and understanding why it matters. The tour moves through the major monuments at a pace you set: Kalta Minor, the incomplete 19th-century minaret covered in blue and white glazed tiles; Tosh-Hovli Palace, the early 19th-century residence of Muhammad Rahim Khan with its interconnected courtyards; and the Muhammad Rahim-khan Madrasa, a rectangular complex of 76 student rooms built in 1876 where literary evenings once drew poets from across Central Asia. The guide stops you at the best angles for photographs and explains the history etched into each building.
The Juma Mosque stands in the center of the old town, its prayer hall supported by a forest of carved wooden columns: each one unique, each one salvaged from older structures and reused over centuries. Nearby, the Pahlavan Mahmud complex holds the tomb of a local poet and healer, rebuilt in 1810 with the city's largest dome, covered in blue tiles. The tour also takes in the city gates (Polvon Darvaza and Ota Darvaza), which once controlled access for Silk Road merchants and still stand as reminders of Khiva's importance as a trading hub. All entrance tickets are included, and the guide points out the details most visitors miss.
If you book with transportation, pickup happens from your hotel and the driver brings you to the old town. If you prefer to walk in on your own, you meet the guide at the gates. Either way, the five to six hours cover the major sites without rushing, and you move through the streets at a pace that lets you absorb the scale of the place. The guide speaks English, Russian or Turkish, and the tour works for all fitness levels because the pace is yours to set.

Yes. Ticket types: Infant (under 7): free.
What is the Kalta Minor minaret and why was it never finished?
Kalta Minor, built in the 19th century by Muhammad Amin Khan, was meant to reach 70 to 80 meters high but stopped at 29 meters. It is the only minaret in Khiva covered entirely in blue and white glazed tiles and majolica. Local legend says the Bukhara khan tried to build a rival minaret, and when Muhammad Amin Khan heard of it, he had the architect thrown from the tower: after which no one else dared finish the work.

The tour includes access to the major monuments and their grounds. Climbing the highest tower is available as an additional activity for a separate fee.
What makes the Juma Mosque different from other mosques in the city?
The Juma Mosque's main prayer hall is supported by a forest of wooden columns, each one carved with unique designs and believed to have been salvaged from older structures and reused over centuries. The columns are the mosque's most distinctive feature, and the guide explains their history and craftsmanship during the tour.
