The experience

You start at Ota Darvoza, the West Gate entrance to Khiva's old city, where your guide introduces the city's layered history. From there the walk moves through the major sites: Kalta Minor, the unfinished minaret covered in vibrant blue tiles; Muhammad Aminxon Madrasa, the largest madrasa in Khiva built in the 1850s; and the Kuhna Ark, the political heart of the city. The route also takes in Muhammad Rahimkhan Madrasasi, a center of learning and power, and Tosh Hovli Palace with its tilework. At each stop, Shokhrukh draws on his background as a Tourism graduate and his time abroad to connect the architecture and politics to the way people actually live in Khiva now.

Juma Mosque, a rare 10th-century structure with 213 wooden pillars, sits at the center of the walk. The guide's commentary moves between the historical detail (who built what and when), and the cultural context that makes those choices matter. This is not a rushed sequence of photo stops. It is a three-hour immersion in how Khiva's past shapes its present. The guiding fee is included. You buy entrance tickets separately at the gate, and they remain valid for a second day if you want to return on your own.
