The Experience
The tour starts at your hotel and moves through the Old Town on foot, stopping at landmarks that span centuries. You'll see the Ark of Bukhara, a fortress built around the 5th century, and the Kalyan Minaret, one of the city's most recognizable structures. The Po-i-Kalan complex brings together the Kalan Mosque, the minaret and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasah, which was the only spiritual educational establishment functioning in the USSR after World War II. Your guide explains what each building was and how it shaped the city's role on the Silk Road.
The walking route takes you through four remaining trading domes positioned along a north-to-south passage through the old city, where you can browse carpets, textiles and Uzbek spices. You'll pass the Bolo Haouz Mosque, built in 1712 and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Labi Hauz square in the southeast, an architectural ensemble from the 16th and 17th centuries with the Divan-Begi madrasah on its eastern side. The Ulughbek Madrasah, completed in 1420, shows off exterior tiles, a fluted dome and stained windows. Hidden courtyards and less-trafficked alleyways break up the main stops, and the guide adjusts the route and timing to match your pace.
Coffee breaks are built into the day, and you'll have time for photos at each site. The guide speaks English, French, German or Russian — you choose when you book. The tour works for families with children from age 7 onward, and the walking is manageable for all fitness levels, though the Old Town's streets are uneven in places.
