The experience
Four to six hours on foot takes you through the heart of Bukhara's old city, starting with the oldest mausoleum from the 9th and 10th centuries: built entirely from brickwork using more than twenty different brick-laying styles with no tiles or colored decoration. You'll move through a complex sacred to three religions, the grave of the Prophet Job and a natural well believed to have healing properties. The guide walks you past the wood-carved pillars of a mosque locals call the forty-pillar mosque, then the fortress viewed from outside, and the tower that has stood since the 12th century without falling.
The tour centers on what people actually made and used in Bukhara. You'll cross three trading domes, each built for a specific purpose, to feel how merchants moved through them centuries ago. You'll step inside two different madrassahs in the same square, each in a different style, and see an original 17th-century classroom. A 12th-century mosque sits hidden beneath street level. It once served both Jewish and Islamic worship and now holds a carpet museum inside. The complex at the heart of the old city brings together a mosque, two madrassahs, and a functioning karavanserai, the hotel of the old days that still operates today.
Between the monuments, you'll visit working craft studios: watch puppets being made, see blacksmiths at their anvils, observe gold embroidery and fabric making, and watch wood carvers. If you want, the guide can arrange a masterclass in preparing a traditional meal or baking bread. Small breaks for coffee and tea are built into the day. The guide speaks English or Russian and keeps the commentary short and simple rather than overwhelming you with dates and historical names. You'll leave with handmade messages from the past and recommendations for local places to eat.
