The experience
Three to four hours takes you through the layers of Bukhara, from the 12th-century Magoki Attoron, which began as a mosque and grew into a market complex as the city shifted from Zoroastrianism to Islam, to the 17th-century Abdulaziz Khan Madrasa, still unfinished and offering a rare look at how these buildings were actually constructed. Your guide meets you at the Nasreddin Afandi Monument and walks you through the Lyabi-Hauz, the public square that anchored daily life, then into the Trading Domes built in the 16th and 17th centuries: Toqi Sarrafon for money changers, Toqi Telpakfurushon for hat sellers, Toqi Zargaron for jewelers. These covered markets still operate today, stalls selling ceramics, textiles, embroidery and handmade jewelry the way they have for centuries.
The Poi Kalon complex brings together three monuments at once: the 12th-century Kalon Minaret with its intricate brick patterns, the Kalon Mosque with its vast courtyard and blue tile work (the prayer hall is closed to non-Muslim visitors, but the surrounding areas open to you), and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa, a functioning Islamic school where students still study. The Ark of Bukhara, a fortress over 2,000 years old, sits at the city's heart. You walk through royal chambers, audience halls and a museum of artifacts, and climb to views across the old city. Bolo Hauz Mosque, built in the early 18th century as the royal prayer space, stands near the Ark with its carved wooden columns and the pond ("hauz") that gives it its name.
The Ulugbek Madrasa, a 15th-century Timurid school commissioned by the astronomer-ruler Ulugbek, shows the geometric tilework and calligraphy of that era: the courtyard and student rooms still stand. Coffee and tea come with the tour. Entry to individual sites (Lyabi-Hauz, Abdulaziz Khan, Poi Kalon Mosque, the Ark) is optional and added at checkout if you want it. Your guide is a licensed professional speaking English or Russian throughout.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Russian.
What is the Lyabi-Hauz complex and why does the tour start there?
The Lyabi-Hauz is Bukhara's main public square, built around a central pool and surrounded by the Kukeldash Madrasah, Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah and Nadir Divan-Begi Khanaka. Your guide meets you at the nearby Nasreddin Afandi Monument and begins here because it was the heart of daily life in the city for centuries: the tour uses it as the anchor to understand how Bukhara worked.
Can I enter the Kalon Mosque at Poi Kalon?
Non-Muslim visitors cannot enter the prayer hall of the Kalon Mosque, but you can explore the vast courtyard, see the blue tile decoration and walk the surrounding areas. The Kalon Minaret and Mir-i-Arab Madrasa, also part of the Poi Kalon complex, are fully open to visitors.
What will I see inside the Ark of Bukhara?
The Ark is a fortress dating back over 2,000 years that served as the residence of Bukhara's rulers and the center of political power. Inside you walk through defensive walls, royal chambers, audience halls and a museum of artifacts from the city's history, and you reach panoramic views of the old city from the top.
Is entry to all these sites included in the tour price?
Entry to individual sites (Lyabi-Hauz, Abdulaziz Khan Madrasa, Poi Kalon Mosque and the Ark of Bukhara) is optional and added at checkout if you want it. Some sites like the Magoki Attoron carpet museum, Ulugbek Madrasa and Bolo Hauz Mosque are accessible without separate tickets.
