The experience
Seven to eight hours gives you room to move through Bukhara without rushing. A professional local guide meets you at your hotel and drives you in a private air-conditioned car to each stop, starting with the countryside sites: the Chor Minor Madrasah with its four blue-domed minarets, the Summer Palace of the Emir (Sitorai Mokhi Khosa) with its blend of Islamic and European architecture, and the Chashma-Ayyub Mausoleum, known as Job's Spring. The guide handles all navigation and context. You step out, look, and listen.
The afternoon moves into the old town proper. You'll see the Ark Fortress, the 9th-century Ismail Samani Mausoleum with its intricate brickwork, and the Bolo-Hauz Mosque across from it with its wooden columns and reflecting pool. The Kalyan Minaret rises nearly 46 meters, one of Bukhara's most recognizable landmarks, and stands beside the Kalyan Mosque, which once held 10,000 worshippers. The Mir-i-Arab Madrasah, built in the 16th century, anchors the religious architecture of the city.
The route also covers the bazaar quarter: Toqi Zargaron (the jewelers' dome), Toqi Sarrafon (money changers' market, now a lively craft bazaar), the Tim of Abdullakhan (a covered silk market), and Toqi Telpakfurushon. You'll reach Lyabi-Hauz, the central square with its large pool and ancient mulberry trees, ringed by the Kukaldosh Madrasah, Nodir Devonbegi Madrasah, and Nodir Devonbegi Khanqah. The Ulugbek Madrasah, built in 1417, and the Abdulazizkhan Madrasah, decorated with tilework and painted ceilings, round out the religious sites. The Magoki Attori Mosque, dating to the 9th–10th centuries, sits on the remains of a Zoroastrian temple. Lunch happens on your schedule with free waiting time. The guide returns you to your hotel when the day is done.
