The experience
The trek starts with a morning transfer from Tashkent to Chimgan Resort, then begins at Melovoy Pass. Day one crosses into Beldersay valley over passes and alongside the Marble River: a short 8km to settle into the rhythm. Day two is the longest push: 15km ascending to the petroglyph site at 2,400 meters, the highest point of the three days, then descending into Nurekata valley. Day three descends another 15km to Shuldak village, where a driver meets you for the return to Tashkent.
Your mountain guide leads the group and handles cooking for smaller parties. Porters and pack animals carry all the camping gear and food, so your own bag stays under 13kg. The company provides tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, a gas stove and all meals. You trek 5 to 7 hours each day, moving through diverse terrain: mountain passes, river valleys, and the Stone Age petroglyphs that mark the high point. The route crosses Ugam Chatkal National Park, where flora and fauna shift with elevation.
The trek runs April through October. Participants need moderate fitness and good cardiovascular health. The guide reserves the right to alter the route for safety or weather. Bring trekking shoes, warm layers for spring and autumn, sunscreen, a headlamp and a backpack. Everything else travels with the animals.
