The experience

Pickup happens in Jackson, and from there the route follows the Grand Loop Road into Yellowstone's main attractions. Old Faithful erupts roughly every 91 minutes, shooting 3,700 to 8,400 gallons of boiling water 145 feet into the air in 15 to 20 seconds. You'll have time to eat your boxed lunch before or after the eruption. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone stretches 20 miles long and reaches 4,000 feet wide in places, with the Lower Falls dropping 308 feet into the canyon and the Upper Falls tumbling 109 feet. You'll stop at several vantage points to see them.

Hayden Valley occupies 50 square miles of ancient lake bed and is one of the best places in the park to spot bison, elk, coyotes and grizzly bears. The Fountain Paint Pot area contains all four types of thermal features (geysers, hot springs, mud pots and fumaroles) connected by a half-mile boardwalk nature trail. You'll also pass the Firehole River, where a 40-foot waterfall sits within 800-foot-thick lava canyon walls and offers a chance to photograph the falls.

Your guide provides running commentary on the area's history, geology and ecology throughout the day. The tour includes bottled water and snacks along with lunch, binoculars for each passenger, a spotting scope for closer wildlife viewing, and the luxury transportation itself.
