The experience
You're in Utah for a few days and have a free afternoon, or you're traveling with kids and want something that doesn't demand rock scrambling or steep elevation gain. Willis Creek solves that: the hike follows a stream bed through a slot canyon where the walls rise and narrow as you go deeper, but the walking stays flat and the difficulty stays low. The stream itself is the path, so there's no technical footwork, and a live guide leads the group through the narrows, pointing out the patterns and textures the water has carved into the sandstone over time.
The canyon works in any season. Summer brings cool shade inside the narrows and the contrast of bright light where the walls open. Winter freezes the stream into a sparkling passage (the guide will tell you if conditions are right for that), and either way, every turn reveals fresh detail in the rock. The distance is yours to set: start at half a mile if you have limited time or want to turn back early, or go the full two miles if the canyon pulls you deeper. Two hours covers the whole outing, including time to move through the narrows at a pace that lets you actually see them.
Bring sturdy shoes with grip. The stream bed has smooth rocks and the water can be cold. Bottled water is included, and public transportation options exist nearby if you don't have a car, though you'll need a valid driver's license and be at least 21 to drive yourself to the trailhead.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (2 to 11 years); Infant (under 2).
Can I do Willis Creek if I've never hiked a slot canyon before?
Willis Creek is built for first-timers and families. The stream bed is the path, there's no scrambling or climbing, and the guide leads the group through the narrows at a pace anyone can follow. The low difficulty level means no prior experience is needed.
How much of the canyon do I actually see in two hours?
Two hours covers the full experience: walking into the narrows, watching the walls tighten and rise around you, and seeing the patterns the water has carved into the sandstone. You'll reach the deepest part of the slot and turn back, or stop earlier if you choose the shorter distance.
What's the stream like in winter?
In winter the stream can freeze over, turning the narrows into a sparkling frozen passage and giving the canyon a completely different kind of beauty. The guide will let you know if conditions are right for that on the day you go.
Do I need to wade through water?
You walk along the stream bed, so your feet will get wet. Bring shoes with good grip for the smooth rocks, and wear clothes you don't mind getting damp. The water can be cold, so plan accordingly.
Is there parking at the trailhead?
Willis Creek is accessible by car, and you'll need a valid driver's license and be at least 21 to drive to the trailhead. Public transportation options are available nearby if you prefer not to drive.
