The experience
The Water-Pocket Fold is a wrinkle in the earth running north to south through Capitol Reef, and this hike crosses its border terrain with llamas as working pack animals rather than just companions. A local guide leads the group through petrified forest and Holt Draw, pointing out the geology and history written into the rock. The llamas carry the gear and snacks, which means you walk lighter and the animals become part of the rhythm of the day instead of a novelty at the start.
Water and trail snacks are provided throughout the 2 hours. The route is fully guided, so navigation and route-finding are handled. Your job is to walk, observe and let the physical work of hiking clear your head. The hike is catered to fit any group size and fitness level, and children from age 5 can join. Infants sit on an adult's lap during any rest stops.
