The experience

The clear kayak is the whole point. Instead of paddling over water and wondering what's below, you sit in a transparent hull and watch the seafloor pass underneath: sandbars, the wreck, and whatever wildlife is moving through. A Florida native guide leads the route to Peanut Island, pointing out what's there and handling the navigation so you focus on paddling and looking down. Arrive 30 minutes early. The tour runs 90 minutes on the water.

You'll encounter fish, manatees, turtles, starfish, iguanas and stingrays as the day unfolds. The guide knows where to find them and what to watch for. Peanut Island itself has history (you'll explore it between paddles), and the shallow water around it is where most of the wildlife congregates. Bring proper swimwear or activewear, water shoes and sunscreen. The operator warns you'll get wet, and the clear hull means sun exposure from below as well as above.

The kayak comes with a life jacket and a dry bag for small belongings. Even-numbered bookings pair tandem, two people per kayak, with a combined weight limit of 425 pounds.
