The Experience

I’ll be honest—I wasn’t sure if a private city tour in Washington DC would feel too “touristy.” But after four hours cruising past the White House, the Capitol, and even that wild Watergate building (which looks surprisingly ordinary), I realized there’s something relaxing about letting someone else handle the city’s maze. Our driver, Paulo, switched between English and Portuguese with my parents—he had this way of pointing out things we’d never have noticed. Like the tiny flags fluttering at the base of the Washington Monument. Never caught those before.

The air inside the car was cool (thank god—it was sticky outside), and Paulo handed us bottled water and these little mints that tasted like eucalyptus. We didn’t get out everywhere—mostly just stopped for photos at places like the Lincoln Memorial or Jefferson Memorial. He’d give us stories while we drove (“That’s where JFK gave his last speech,” he said, nodding at the Kennedy Center), then let us wander for a few minutes. At one point my mom tried to pronounce “Dupont Circle” with her Brazilian accent and Paulo just grinned—didn’t correct her, just made it part of the fun.

I liked seeing Embassy Row and those grand houses near Rock Creek Park—felt like peeking behind DC’s official face. The tour covers a lot in four hours without feeling rushed (I mean, you don’t get to go inside everything—that’s clear upfront). Still, rolling past the Pentagon as Paulo explained its five sides (in three languages!) made me realize how much history is packed into these streets. I still think about that quiet moment by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial—just us and some morning birds.
