itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Full day Washington DC sightseeing tour

  • Depart New York City to Washington DC
  • Visit Arlington National Cemetery and Kennedy gravesite
  • See the Lincoln Memorial
  • Visit Korean War Veterans Memorial
  • Visit Vietnam Veterans Memorial
  • Visit Jefferson Memorial
  • See the White House exterior
  • Pass by the US Capitol building
  • Walk around the National Mall and reflecting pool
  • Explore Union Station and its shops
  • Return to New York City

I didn’t expect to feel so quiet walking through Arlington National Cemetery. Our guide, Maria, kept her voice low as we followed her past rows of white stones — she pointed out the Kennedy family gravesite and I swear the air felt heavier there. There was this gentle hum from the city in the distance but mostly just wind and shoes crunching gravel. Even though we’d left New York before sunrise (I barely remember Jersey or Delaware), that moment woke me up more than coffee could.

The National Mall was bigger than I pictured — it’s almost too much to take in at once. We stopped at the Lincoln Memorial and then wandered along the reflecting pool. Some school kids were giggling by the water; one tried to skip a stone and missed by a mile. At the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Maria told us about some of the names on the wall and for a second I felt like an intruder on someone else’s grief. The Korean War Memorial statues looked almost alive in that gray morning light.

We didn’t go inside the White House or Capitol (they tell you upfront), but standing outside with everyone craning for photos felt oddly communal — like we were all sharing this weird mix of curiosity and respect. Lunch was quick near Union Station, nothing fancy but honestly I just needed to sit down by then. I tried saying “thank you” in Spanish to our driver, who grinned and corrected my accent. So yeah, not my best language moment.

By late afternoon, when we rolled back toward New York, my phone was full of blurry photos and my head was buzzing with all these little details — like how different DC smells compared to Manhattan (less pizza, more grass). I still think about those memorials sometimes, especially Arlington. It’s not just sightseeing; it’s something that sticks with you.
