The experience
The tour departs New York and crosses through New Jersey and Pennsylvania to Philadelphia, where you'll see the Liberty Bell at its center, Constitution Square and Congress Hall, then walk Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited street in America. A panoramic drive takes in the financial district and Benjamin Franklin Parkway before you reach the famous Rocky Steps. From there the route heads east into Lancaster County, home to the Amish community.
In Amish country you ride an authentic buggy through farm fields to see how residents live without electricity, running water, telephones or modern appliances. After the buggy ride, you visit the marketplace to browse handmade crafts and local products. Late afternoon brings the drive east to Washington DC, where you'll stay overnight at the Wyndham Garden with breakfast included the next morning.
Day two starts at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial by the Tidal Basin, then moves to Arlington National Cemetery to witness the Changing of the Guard and the Kennedy family gravesite (a passport or U.S. ID is required for entry). The National Air and Space Museum displays the Wright Brothers' 1903 Flyer and Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis. You'll also visit the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, which currently features the "Deep Time" exhibit with real dinosaur fossils including a T-Rex and Triceratops. Capitol Hill comes next, covering the Capitol building, Senate, House of Representatives and Supreme Court, followed by views of the White House and the Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Korea and Vietnam Memorials. The return to New York happens in the late afternoon.
