Upper Antelope Canyon guided tour

  • Check in for tour
  • Ride tent-covered truck to canyon
  • Walk through canyon with guide
  • Take photos of sandstone walls
  • Learn about geology and culture
  • Walk up ramps and stairs to exit

The experience

The day starts with check-in, then you load into a tent-covered truck for a 15-minute ride through the deep red sand of the canyon wash: the operator calls it feeling like a tourist on Mars. Your Navajo guide meets you at the canyon entrance and walks you through the slot canyon, stopping for photos as you go. The sandstone walls were sculpted by water and wind over time, and your guide explains the geology and the cultural history of the area as you move through.

The light changes the canyon's appearance throughout the day. In the morning and afternoon, the rich deep colors of the rock show clearly. From April through September at midday, daylight pierces through the narrow opening above and reflects off the formations. That's the moment most photographers wait for. Once you've finished walking the canyon floor, you climb metal ramps and stairs up and over the top of the canyon, then back to the entrance.

A Navajo guide leads the tour in English. Entry ticket and permits are included. You'll need to bring a children's car or booster seat if you're traveling with anyone under 55 pounds. No bags of any kind are permitted, not backpacks, not purses, nothing. No tripods, selfie-sticks or drones either. Arrive 45 minutes before the tour starts. If you're late, your ticket is voided and not refundable.
