itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Ligai Si Anii Canyon

  • Arrive at Ligai Si Anii Canyon
  • Walk 30-yard trail to canyon
  • View H-shaped canyon formation
  • Observe smooth, curved rock walls
  • Take photographs of canyon views
  • Learn about geology and culture
  • Visit Sheep Head Canyon
  • Admire ancient rocks and sandstones

The first thing that hit me was how quiet Ligai Si Anii Canyon felt. Not silent—there was this soft echo when our boots crunched over sand, and the air had that cool, dry smell you only get in canyons. Our guide, Thomas, pointed at a swirl on the wall and said it was older than any of us could really imagine. I tried to picture people here centuries ago, maybe leaving those markings just because they felt like it, or maybe for reasons we’ll never know. The light kept shifting—sometimes gold, sometimes almost pink against the rock. I didn’t expect it to feel so peaceful.

We squeezed through this H-shaped passageway (I’m not exactly small, so there was some sideways shuffling) and Thomas laughed when I asked if he ever got stuck. He just grinned and said you learn where to breathe in. Someone behind me tried to pronounce “Ligai Si Anii” and totally mangled it—I think even the canyon echoed their mistake back at them. There were heart-shaped patterns on one wall that looked accidental but also kind of perfect. That part stuck with me for some reason.

Afterwards we headed over to Sheep Head Canyon. The rocks there are rougher—almost gritty under your hand—and you can see layers stacked up like pages in a book nobody’s finished reading yet. Thomas told us about the ancient sandstones and pointed out these faint lines he called “stories of time.” It made me wish I knew how to read rocks like that. We didn’t rush; nobody seemed in a hurry, which was nice for once.
