Turnagain Arm Private Half-Day Wildlife Tour from Anchorage
Turnagain Arm's scenic highway, three wildlife viewing stops, and bears and moose up close
A private half-day tour from Anchorage travels south along Turnagain Arm (one of Alaska's most scenic stretches of highway) through Chugach State Park, with a one-hour visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to see bears, moose, muskox, caribou and bison. Your guide leads you through the wildlife center, then gives you time to explore on your own, and stops at scenic overlooks along the way where you can watch for beluga whales and bore tides. The itinerary is flexible: ask your guide to linger somewhere or add a stop, and they will adjust.

The experience
The tour starts in Anchorage and heads south on the Seward Highway, which hugs the shorelines of Turnagain Arm as it passes through Chugach State Park. The mountains rise 3,000 feet on your left. On your right, the flats of Turnagain Arm stretch toward Cook Inlet. Your guide stops at scenic overlooks built into the route: places like Beluga Point, where you can watch for whales rolling in the surf a few hours before high tide, and Girdwood, where viewing scopes and interpretive signs frame 180-degree views of the Arm. The bore tide (an incoming wave that can reach six feet high and stretch the entire width of the Arm) is visible from these stops when conditions align, and kayakers and surfers sometimes ride it for several miles.
The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center sits partway down this route. You spend one hour there, starting with a guided walk through the park where your guide points out bears, moose, muskox, caribou and bison in natural settings, then you have time to explore on your own and take photographs. The center sits near Portage Lake, which was carved by glaciers over thousands of years and is deep enough to submerge an 80-story building. Blue icebergs from Portage Glacier sometimes wash to shore. On the return to Anchorage, your guide may stop at Potter Marsh, a half-mile wooden boardwalk trail known for bird watching and part of the 16-mile Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge.
Your guide is experienced and dedicated to your group alone. They share in-depth information and personal stories about Alaska, and they adjust the tour to your pace. If you want to spend longer at a stop or make an extra stop, they accommodate it. The vehicle is air-conditioned and private. Pickup is included from your Anchorage location. The tour runs about four and a half hours total.

What animals will I see at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center?
The center is home to bears, moose, muskox, caribou and bison living in natural settings. Your guide leads you through the park first, then you have time to explore and photograph on your own.
Can I see beluga whales on this tour?
Beluga whales sometimes appear in Turnagain Arm a few hours before high tide, when they come in with the tide to feed on salmon. What is the bore tide, and will I see it?
The bore tide is an incoming wave that stretches the entire width of Turnagain Arm and can reach six feet high as it rushes in. Kayakers and surfers sometimes ride it for several miles. Whether you see it depends on the tide schedule during your tour. Your guide will know the timing and position you at the best viewing spots if conditions allow.
