The experience

The tour runs four to five hours and moves through Old Mission Peninsula in a forward-facing limousine with air conditioning, not a party bus or a crowded shuttle. You'll see both the East and West arms of Grand Traverse Bay from the tasting rooms: Hawthorne sits on a high bluff with views of both bays, and Chateau Chantal overlooks them from one of the peninsula's highest points. The vehicle holds your group or combines you with other couples and small parties, depending on the booking option you choose.

Your guide is a wine expert, not just a driver. They know the local wines and can steer you toward what you actually want to drink: reds like the Merlot-Cab Franc blend at Peninsula Cellars or the BDX at Bonobo; whites including the Auxerrois and Dry Riesling; or the rare Ice Wine at Chateau Chantal that was served at a White House dinner. Brys Estates is famous for the Froze, a frozen wine drink, and Bowers Harbor, nicknamed the dog winery, has a Pinot Secco that regulars swear by. You tell your guide which wineries are on your wish list, and the route adjusts to fit what's open and what appeals to you that day.

Wine tastings, flights, bottles and food are not included in the tour price, so you pay for what you taste and eat at each stop. Snack packs, charcuterie boards, popcorn flights and fried goat cheese are available for purchase. Groups of six or more typically get their own vehicle.
