The Experience
The tour picks you up downtown and moves through the peninsula in a climate-controlled Yukon, Suburban or Escalade—not a retired school bus. Your guide is a local wine enthusiast, often a university graduate who knows the region's vineyards and can steer you toward what you actually want to taste. Semi-private groups of fewer than 6 stay together; larger bookings roll in their own vehicle. The pace is yours: a typical tour hits 4 stops over 4 to 5 hours, but private groups can dial it down to 2 or 3 wineries, or skip the last stop and head to dinner instead.
At each winery you taste what's poured—wine samples are included, though flights, bottles and food cost extra. The wineries rotate based on the season and what's open that day, but the list includes Hawthorne Vineyards, Mari Vineyards, Bowers Harbor, Chateau Chantal, Chateau Grand Traverse, Brys Estates, Bonobo Winery, 2 Lads and Old Mission Distillery. Your complimentary bottle arrives with the booking, so you leave with something to take home or open later. If you buy wine along the way, the tour can drop you back downtown afterward, and you can pick it up the next day.
The vehicle has working air conditioning, which matters on a warm afternoon when you're moving between tasting rooms. Downtown Traverse City pickup and drop-off are included, and hotels or motels nearby can usually arrange a return stop after the tour.
