The experience

If you have a free afternoon and have never stood on a paddleboard before, this class builds the foundation in 90 minutes. You start with board orientation and the mechanics of the paddle stroke, then move into practicing turns and directional control on the water. A certified instructor guides you through each step, and the class is designed for all fitness levels, so you're not racing anyone or keeping up with experienced paddlers. Everything you need (board, paddle, and life jacket) is provided.

The second half of the class is a guided tour where you apply what you just learned. Instead of drilling techniques in one spot, you paddle out and move across the water with the instructor, which is how you actually build confidence and feel the board respond to your weight and your strokes. The location shifts depending on conditions (sometimes Virginia Beach, sometimes Chesapeake), so the instructor picks the calmest water available on the day you book.

You'll need to get yourself to the meeting point. Public transportation options are nearby. Bring a towel and wear clothes you don't mind getting wet. The class wraps in time to grab lunch or head back to your hotel, and you'll have the basics to paddle on your own if you decide to rent a board later.
