South Fork American River Whitewater Rafting: Class 3 Rapids
Four hours of Class 3 rapids, then calmer water where you can swim
Half-day whitewater rafting trip on the South Fork American River in California's Gold Country, where you paddle Class 2 and 3 rapids with a professional guide, then drift through scenic stretches ideal for swimming. The Upper Chili Bar section is the most popular beginner-friendly run in California, and the trip includes all safety gear, wetsuits, a river shuttle, snacks and water. Children from age 8 are welcome; guides speak English and Spanish.
The Experience
A half-day on the South Fork American River starts with a shuttle to the put-in, then four hours of paddling through the Upper Chili Bar section. The rapids here run Class 2 and 3—thrilling enough to feel the current but manageable for anyone without prior experience. Your guide handles the technical calls while you paddle, and the rhythm of the day alternates: stretches where the water pushes hard, then calmer sections where you can catch your breath and take in the Gold Country landscape around you. The river cuts through the terrain where the California Gold Rush began in 1849, and guides share that history as you float.
Between the rapids come slower passages perfect for swimming if the water temperature allows. You'll have water and snacks on the raft, and a non-alcoholic beverage waiting after you pull out. All the gear is provided—wetsuits and splash jackets (seasonal), life jacket, helmet, and the raft itself—so you show up ready to paddle. The family-owned operation has over sixty years guiding these rivers, and their guides are trained not just in safety but in reading the water and keeping groups together.
The trip works for families with kids eight and up, solo travelers, and groups of friends. It fits into a morning or afternoon without consuming your whole day, and the shuttle runs from a central meet place, so you don't need to arrange your own transport to the river. Midweek and weekend departures are available; the midweek option tends to have smaller groups.
