The Tunnel Chute: one mile downstream, and the rapids don't stop there.

Full-day whitewater rafting on the Middle Fork of the American River near Auburn, California, where you paddle through 17 miles of Class 3-4 rapids, including the world-famous Tunnel Chute. The trip runs 8 hours from 8:15 AM, with a 45-minute van ride to the put-in at Oxbow Reservoir, lunch at a riverside stop, and return to Auburn around 4 PM. All safety gear, wetsuits, water and snacks are included; children from age 13 are welcome.

The Experience

What makes the Middle Fork one of the best whitewater runs in the west is the mix: you hit the Good Morning rapid early, then the Tunnel Chute just over a mile in—the one everyone talks about—and after five miles of solid Class 3 and 4 water, the river opens up. That's when you get to jump off rocks, surf the current, and ride the bull as you float through the canyon toward lunch. The guides know the line through each rapid and run the boat; you paddle when they call it and brace when the water hits.

After lunch the pace shifts. The river stays calm for a few miles, which is what you need after eating, then it wakes up again at Chunder Pond. Chunder Falls, Parallel Parking, and Ski Jump bring the adrenaline back, and then comes Ruck-A-Chucky—a mandatory walk around it lets you watch the guides run their raft down a commercial Class 6 waterfall, which is something most rafters never see. The trip ends at the old Greenwood Bridge site, and you're back at your vehicle by 4 PM.

You meet at 8:15 AM in Auburn and ride 45 minutes in an air-conditioned van to Oxbow Reservoir, where the guides hand out gear and wetsuits if you need them. Bring a change of clothes and a towel; everything else—helmet, PFD, splash jacket, water, snacks and lunch—is there. The river is cold and the rapids are real, so moderate fitness and comfort in moving water matter; guides speak English and Spanish, and kids from 13 on up can go.

Top questions

What is the Tunnel Chute, and when do we hit it?

The Tunnel Chute is the famous rapid on this stretch of the Middle Fork—it comes just over a mile downstream from the put-in at Oxbow Reservoir, right after the warmup rapid called Good Morning. It's the signature moment of the trip and the reason this run is known across the west.

How much paddling do we actually do, or is the guide running the boat the whole time?

The guide runs the boat through the rapids and calls when you paddle and when you brace. You're not steering, but you're working—paddling on command and holding on when the water hits. The five miles of Class 3 and 4 water in the morning and the afternoon rapids after lunch are both active.

What happens at Ruck-A-Chucky, and why do we walk around it?

Ruck-A-Chucky is a Class 6 waterfall—too big and dangerous to run with passengers. You walk around it on the bank and watch the guides take their raft down it, which is a rare chance to see expert paddlers on something most commercial trips can't do.

Is there really a lunch break, and what do we eat?

Yes—after five miles of morning rapids, the river calms down and you stop at a riverside lunch spot. The operator includes lunch as part of the trip; the specific menu isn't detailed, but it's built into the day so you're not paddling hungry.

What do I need to bring, and what's provided?

Bring a change of clothes and a towel. The operator provides all safety gear, helmet, personal flotation device, wetsuits and splash jackets if needed, bottled water, snacks, and lunch. The van ride to and from the river is included.

Can kids do this, or is it adults only?

Children are welcome from age 13 and up. The trip is Class 3-4 whitewater, so some swimming ability and comfort in moving water help, but the guide is there and you're in a raft with experienced paddlers.
