The Experience
The South Fork of the American River runs 21 miles in a single day, and this trip takes you the whole length. You meet at 8:15am, get fitted with a personal flotation device and helmet, and push off into Class 2-3 water. The rapids have names—Troublemaker, Satan's Cesspool, Hospital Bar—and they come one after another without long flat stretches between them. A guide leads the boat and calls the line through each drop; you paddle when instructed and hold on when the current does the work.
Midway through the day, the boat pulls into a riverside campground where lunch and refreshments wait. This is the only break in the float, and it gives you a chance to dry out and eat before the second half of the run. The afternoon section covers the remaining miles back toward the takeout. You're typically back at your car around 4pm—eight hours from start to finish, most of it on the water.
All necessary gear comes with the trip: paddles, helmets, personal flotation devices, and the guide's knowledge of the water. The guide speaks English or Spanish. Children are welcome from age 6 onward. The trip is suitable for all fitness levels, though the full day and continuous paddling demand steady effort and comfort in moving water.
What’s included
- Lunch and refreshments at the riverside campground.
- all necessary on-water safety gear including personal flotation device, helmet and paddle.
- guide in English or Spanish.
- all fees and taxes.

Is this one for you?The full day on the water and continuous paddling demand steady effort and comfort in moving water; if you're looking for a short, mellow float instead of a full-day run through named rapids, a shorter section of the South Fork would be the better fit.
