The experience

The day starts with pickup from your San Francisco hotel between 8 and 9am, depending on where you're staying. From there, you head north across the Golden Gate Bridge while your guide shares the region's history and points out the landscape. The drive gives you time to meet the other travelers in your group: the tour caps at 12 people, which keeps the pace relaxed and the conversation real. By mid-morning you're at the first winery, where you'll spend roughly an hour learning about wine and tasting several local varietals and blends. The wineries rotate based on availability, but past stops have included Peter Cellars, Homewood Winery, Wellington Cellars, Seamus Wines, BR Cohn and Mayo Family Winery.

Around noon you break for lunch in downtown Sonoma, where you have your pick of restaurants on the historic plaza. This is your own time and your own expense: the guide isn't steering you anywhere. If you want to walk into Mission San Francisco Solano or browse the boutiques and gourmet shops, you can. By 1pm you're back for the second and third tastings, spending another hour at each winery. All tasting fees are covered. You're only paying for anything you choose to buy.

On the return to San Francisco, the tour stops in Sausalito, a seaside village where you can walk the boardwalk or grab a coffee. There's an option to take a ferry back to San Francisco across the bay if you want: that ferry fare is separate. The final stop is the Golden Gate Bridge for photos and views, and you're back at your hotel between 4:30 and 5pm. The whole day runs about nine and a half hours from pickup to drop-off.
