Skagway Husky Puppy Tour: Play Time at Remote Sled Dog Camp
Puppy play without the cart ride: what the other Skagway sled dog tours leave out
This guided tour from Skagway takes you up the Klondike Highway to Tutshi Sled Dog Camp in the Canadian tundra, where you spend unhurried time playing with and petting future Iditarod and Yukon Quest sled dog puppies. The van picks you up at the cruise ship dock, stops at Pitchfork Falls, the White Pass summit, and historical Gold Rush sites along the way, with a live English-speaking guide narrating the route. The puppy play time is the centerpiece: no cart ride, no educational lecture, just time with the dogs and their handlers.

The experience
The tour starts at your cruise ship dock in Skagway and heads north on the Klondike Highway toward the Canadian border. Along the way, the guide stops to explain what you're looking at: the 2,000-foot cascade of Pitchfork Falls dropping into the Skagway River beneath the White Pass and Yukon Railway bridge, the summit viewpoint where the highway crests, and the buildings and landscape tied to the Klondike Gold Rush. These aren't quick photo stops. The narration gives the history context so the scenery means something. The van carries small groups, and the travel time to the remote camp is built into the 4.5-hour tour length.
The sled dog camp itself is the main event. You get to play with and pet the puppies (some of them future Iditarod and Yukon Quest racers), and meet the mushers and handlers who train them. There's no set time limit here. You're not rushed through. The camp has a small gift shop and restrooms if you need them. Unlike the operator's other sled dog tour, this one doesn't include an educational presentation or a ride on the summer cart, so the time goes entirely to the dogs. If you want to meet musher Michelle Phillips or Ed Hopkins, they may be at the camp, though that's not guaranteed on every departure.
The van returns you to the cruise ship dock. Infants and small children can come along: infants ride on an adult's lap, and strollers are welcome. All fees, taxes, and the guide are included. Snacks at the camp are available for purchase if you want them.
