The Experience

Your guide meets you in downtown Skagway and drives nine miles along the coast to Musher's Camp in Dyea, passing glacially fed streams and waterfalls. The route takes you through the foothills toward the Tongass National Rainforest, where the real ride begins. You'll climb into a specialized unimog—a rugged mountain vehicle—and head up the steep, winding road to the dog team's staging area at the top.

Once you reach the summit, your musher greets you with a custom-designed wheeled sled and a team of 16 very excited Alaskan huskies. Many of these dogs are Iditarod veterans, kept in racing condition during the summer season through exactly this kind of work. You ride down a mile-long, zig-zagging trail deep into the rainforest, feeling the power and speed of the team as they pull the sled through the forest. The unimog then takes you to a breathtaking overlook of the Dyea tidal flats, where depending on the month you might see eagles, bears, seals, wild flowers and snow-capped mountains.

Back at the camp, the musher leads a "Kennel Talk"—a Q&A session covering the most frequently asked questions about sled dog racing, training and what it takes to become an Iditarod champion. You'll have plenty of time to play with the Alaskan husky puppies, which is essential to their socialization and future racing success. The visit ends around a crackling fire, with access to a gift shop and the chance to ask any additional questions about the sport.

Is this one for you?You ride the sled yourself—this is not a spectator experience—so it suits anyone who wants to feel the power of the dogs firsthand rather than watch from the sidelines. The tour is shared with other guests and led by a musher who handles the team; if you prefer a private experience or want to learn mushing techniques in depth, a different product would serve you better. The fixed schedule and included transport mean the day is arranged for you; you show up in Skagway and the guide handles the logistics.
