Paddle at your own pace through waters where manatees drift beneath your kayak

Silver Springs kayaking and paddleboarding is a self-guided paddle through Florida's clearest waters, where you navigate winding creeks beneath cypress and oak trees while spotting manatees, otters, turtles, birds and wild monkeys. You choose between a tandem kayak, single kayak or paddleboard, and the 3-hour route is yours to follow—no guide, no fixed schedule, just you and the water. Life vests, paddles, dry bags on request and a digital map are included; park admission and launch fees are paid on-site to the state park.

The Experience

The kayak or paddleboard sits ready at the launch, and the route unfolds in front of you without a guide steering the pace. You'll glide across water so clear you can see straight to the bottom, where ancient springs bubble up from the Earth and the forest closes in overhead—towering cypress and oak trees create a canopy so thick that sunlight filters through in patches. The winding creeks mean every turn brings a new stretch of water, and the wildlife appears without warning: otters slip past, turtles sun themselves on logs, fish dart beneath the hull, birds call from the branches. The manatees are the draw—gentle giants that often surface right beside your kayak as you paddle along.

You choose your vessel at checkout: a tandem kayak (two paddles, two people), a single kayak if the group is odd-numbered, or a paddleboard if you want to stand. All three come with paddles, life vests for adults and kids, a safety whistle and a digital map so you know where the route goes. Dry bags are available on request if you need to keep gear dry. The 3-hour window is yours to use—move fast or drift slowly, stop to watch the monkeys in the treetops or paddle deeper into the creeks. There's no schedule to keep and no one else's pace to match.

Families with children from age 1 can bring infants along (they sit on an adult's lap), and the self-guided format means you set the rhythm around what works for your group. The water is calm and the routes are easy to follow, so first-time paddlers and experienced explorers both find their way. Service animals are welcome. Park admission and the launch fee are paid directly to Silver Springs State Park when you arrive on-site—those costs are separate from the paddle rental.

Top questions

What wildlife will I actually see paddling through Silver Springs?

Manatees are the signature encounter—they surface regularly beneath kayaks and paddleboards as you move through the water. You'll also spot otters, turtles sunbathing on logs, a wide variety of fish and birds, and wild monkeys swinging through the treetops along the creeks.

Can I bring my young children on this paddle?

Children are welcome from age 1, and infants ride on an adult's lap in the kayak or paddleboard. Families often choose the tandem kayak so one adult can paddle while a child sits between them, or the paddleboard for a different setup.

Is this a guided tour or do I paddle on my own?

This is self-guided—you navigate the winding waterways at your own pace using the digital map included with your rental. There's no guide leading the group, so you choose when to move, when to stop and how long to linger at each spot.

What's included in the rental, and what do I pay separately?

The kayak or paddleboard rental includes paddles, life vests for all ages, a safety whistle, a digital map and dry bags on request. Park admission and the launch fee are paid directly to Silver Springs State Park when you arrive—those are separate charges.

How long is the paddle, and can I go faster or slower than the route suggests?

The paddle is designed for 3 hours, but since it's self-guided you control the pace entirely. You can move quickly through the creeks or drift slowly beneath the cypress trees—the route is yours to explore at whatever speed suits your group.

Do I need paddling experience to do this?

No—the routes are peaceful and easy to follow, and the water is calm. First-time paddlers and experienced explorers both navigate Silver Springs comfortably, and the self-guided format means you set a pace that works for your skill level.
