The day starts with a brief kayak tutorial covering paddling basics, technique and how to keep distance from wildlife, then you're on the water. You launch onto the King's Trail, where wild monkeys live along the shoreline and old relics from Florida's first tourist attraction sit visible from the kayak. As you paddle downstream into the main river, manatees are usually active. In winter months they gather in larger numbers to stay warm in the spring's constant 72-degree water. The treasure maps you carry point you toward sunken ships scattered along the route, turning the paddle into a low-key hunt for the relics beneath you.

The spring itself pumps 550 gallons of water per day and marks the end of your route before you paddle back to the ramp. Because this is self-guided, you set the pace: linger where wildlife appears, move faster through stretches that don't hold your attention, stop to photograph whatever catches your eye. The operator notes that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed (these are wild animals), so distance and caution matter, but the clear water and shallow depth make spotting easier than in murky rivers. You'll finish by paddling back to the ramp, where staff help you out of the kayak.

The tandem kayak holds two people and has a maximum combined weight of 425 pounds, with no single paddler exceeding 250 pounds.
