The Experience

I honestly didn’t expect my dog to be so chill about the whole thing. We showed up at Lake Ivanhoe in Orlando, and there was this easygoing vibe right away—just a few other people, some wagging tails, and our guide, who greeted us by name (well, me and my dog). The boards were lined up on the grass, and I could smell sunscreen and lake water. I was nervous about falling in, but the guide just laughed and said most people only get wet if they want to. That made me feel better—though I still double-checked my pup’s vest straps like three times.

The lesson part was actually fun—nothing stiff or technical. Our guide had this way of explaining things that made sense even when my brain was busy worrying about balancing both myself and a squirmy dog. My dog kept looking back at me like, “Are you sure about this?” but after a few wobbly minutes we found our rhythm. The water was calm and clear enough that you could see little ripples under the board. There were a couple of ducks gliding by, which distracted my dog for a second (almost tipped us), but it turned into one of those moments where you just laugh because what else can you do?

I think what surprised me most was how peaceful it felt out there—just paddling along with downtown Orlando in the distance, sun on our backs, everyone sort of doing their own thing but together. The guide would paddle over every now and then to check in or give tips (“Try shifting your weight forward,” she said at one point—made all the difference). It wasn’t perfect; I definitely splashed myself more than once and my dog tried to drink the lake water (don’t recommend), but honestly? I still think about that view from the middle of Lake Ivanhoe with my best friend sitting between my knees.
