Descend hidden canyons only reachable by rappel, swim, and hike

A half-day canyoneering adventure in Seattle takes you down waterfalls and through remote canyon terrain accessible only by rappelling. You'll descend 2–4 rappels under 30 feet, swim short sections, and downclimb protected terrain while hiking for four hours total. All climbing equipment and SELAND canyoning wetsuits are provided. A live guide leads in English or Spanish.

The experience

Wild Sky is the only company running canyoneering tours in the Seattle region, which means the canyons you move through are places you cannot reach any other way. You'll wear a SELAND wetsuit (the latest generation equipment the operator stocks), and carry full safety gear as you work through whitewater canyon terrain. The half-day format keeps the commitment manageable while still delivering the core experience: rappelling, swimming and hiking through natural environments most visitors never see.

The four-hour trip is built for beginners who want to test canyoneering without a full-day commitment. You'll rappel 2–4 times, each descent under 30 feet, and swim short sections unless you request more water work. Downclimbs are protected, and the hiking and movement are steady throughout. The operator rates this as challenging but appropriate for anyone with moderate physical fitness and the mental readiness for four hours in a canyon environment: no prior canyoneering experience required.

A live guide leads the group in English or Spanish and manages all the technical setup. Bring water and snacks. Lunch is not included. The operator does not recommend this trip for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health. Participants should be prepared for cold water, uneven terrain, and the physical demands of climbing, swimming and hiking without breaks.

Is this one for you?Small groups work best here because the guide manages each rappel individually and the canyon terrain limits how many people can move through at once. Book this if you want to try canyoneering without committing to a full day, and you're ready for four hours of continuous physical activity in cold water and steep terrain.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What does a 2–4 rappel under 30 feet feel like for someone who has never rappelled before?

A rappel under 30 feet is short enough that beginners can focus on the technique and the sensation without the exposure of a longer drop. You control your descent using a harness and rope, and the guide manages the setup and your safety throughout. Most first-time rappellers find the short drops manageable and the experience of descending a waterfall itself is the memorable part.

How much swimming is involved, and do I have to swim if I don't want to?

The itinerary includes short swims as part of moving through the canyon, but you can request a trip with minimal or no swimming when you book. The guide will work with your comfort level and adjust the route accordingly.

What makes canyoneering in Seattle different from other outdoor activities in the region?

Canyoneering is the only way to access the interior of these whitewater canyons. Hiking trails do not run through them, and rappelling is the method that lets you move down and through the terrain. Wild Sky is the only operator offering this access in Seattle, so the canyons themselves are not crowded with tour groups.

Do I need to bring my own climbing equipment or wetsuit?

No. All climbing equipment and SELAND canyoning wetsuits are included and provided by Wild Sky. You bring water, snacks and a change of clothes for after the trip.

How physically demanding is four hours of canyoneering for someone who is fit but has never done this before?

The operator requires moderate physical fitness and mental preparation for four hours of continuous hiking, swimming and rappelling. You will be moving the entire time, and the terrain is uneven and wet. If you have cardiovascular concerns, spinal issues, or are pregnant, this trip is not recommended.
