The Apache Trail sits 30 minutes from Phoenix and ranks among America's most scenic drives. The road itself is historic: it's the same path early settlers used in the late 1800s, and the tour stops at sites that show how they lived. Tortilla Flat, a real town with a population of six, sits along the route. It's known for Prickly Pear Ice Cream and shops that feel like a step back in time. From Christmas through Easter, live entertainment plays on the outdoor patio—something worth timing your visit around if the season works. Lunch isn't included, but the town has food options if you want to stop. The drive itself is the main event: the road winds through desert and mountain landscape, and your guide points out the plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert, along with the geology and history woven into the terrain.

Canyon Lake appears at the end of the loop—a mountain lake that feels like an oasis in the desert. This is where Dolly the Steamboat operates, and you have the option to ride it. The lake is also used for fishing, boating and picnics. Before you reach it, the tour passes through a remote overlook called the Grand Canyon of the Superstition Mountains, a vantage point that shows the vastness of the Tonto National Forest. The whole tour runs four to six hours depending on what you choose to do at each stop.
