The Experience

So yeah, the ferry leaves Pier 33 and you're standing on the deck watching the prison get closer, and it hits you that you're actually going to walk through the cells where some of the most dangerous inmates in American history were locked up. Day one is all Alcatraz — you board at Fisherman's Wharf, get the audio tour (it's really good, available in ten languages), and then you're loose on the island for as long as you want. The self-guided audio tour runs about 2.5 to 3 hours, but ferries leave every 30 to 40 minutes, so if you want to stay longer or bail early, you can. You see the abandoned cellblocks, read about the escape attempts, learn the whole arc from military fort to federal penitentiary to the Native American occupation in the '70s. The views back toward the Golden Gate Bridge and the city skyline are just there the whole time you're walking around.

The next day you show up at Fisherman's Wharf near the cable car turnaround on Taylor Street, grab a bike, and ride. The tour is guided, so you're not navigating — your guide handles that — and it's easy enough for all ages and fitness levels. You get a helmet, lock, and map included, and the whole thing is 8 miles over about three hours. You pass Aquatic Park, Fort Mason (now an arts and events space), Crissy Field with all the yachts and the Golden Gate views, the Palace of Fine Arts from 1915, and then you're riding the Golden Gate Promenade with the wetlands on one side. There's a coffee stop somewhere in there, a bathroom break, and then you're actually pedaling across the Golden Gate Bridge itself — the full 2-mile span. Once you hit Sausalito on the other side, you can grab lunch at the boardwalk, walk around, take photos, and if you want to get back to the city, you can take the ferry (that's a separate ticket, but it's an option).

The booking is locked to specific dates — the day you book is the day you visit Alcatraz, and the bike tour happens the next day. You'll get your exact ferry departure time after you confirm, and you need a government-issued photo ID for everyone in your group to board the Alcatraz ferry. Bring layers because the weather changes fast out there, comfortable shoes, water, and sunscreen. If you want to keep the bike after the tour and ride longer, you can — full-day rental is included.
