Electric hoverboard lesson then cruise San Diego bay views

You’ll learn to ride an electric Onewheel hoverboard right by San Diego’s bayfront—with all safety gear provided—before gliding past Liberty Station’s parks and historic buildings alongside your local guide. The lesson is relaxed, photos are included, and you can switch to an electric scooter if you want. There’s something about rolling by the water here that sticks with you.

The Experience

You hear it before you see it—a low whirring, almost like a distant bee, coming from the row of Onewheels lined up under the palm trees at Liberty Station. Our guide, Matt, was already there, helmet in hand and grinning like he’d just come off the board himself. He handed out gear (I fumbled with my elbow pads for way too long), then started explaining how the Onewheel works. I’m not sure I absorbed all the technical stuff—mostly I remember him saying “just trust your feet” and laughing when I looked skeptical.

The first time I stepped onto the board, my knees wobbled so much that Matt had to steady me by the backpack straps. There’s this weird moment where your brain says “nope,” but then suddenly you’re gliding forward and it feels…quiet? The pavement was still damp from morning fog, so every turn felt softer than I expected. A couple walking their dog waved as we rolled past—I think they were more amused than impressed. The air smelled faintly salty from the bay, mixed with sunscreen and grilled onions drifting over from some food truck nearby.

Once we got moving for real, we followed Matt along the water toward Embarcadero. He pointed out some old Navy buildings—said one used to be a bakery—and told us about how Liberty Station used to be a training base. At one point he let us try a patch of grass (I nearly bailed but didn’t), and for a second it felt like surfing except without any waves or wipeouts. If you don’t want to try the Onewheel, they have electric scooters too—someone in our group swapped after ten minutes and still had fun.

I keep thinking about that stretch near the harbor where everything went quiet except for the hum of wheels and seagulls overhead. It’s not something I thought I’d ever do in San Diego—definitely not something I’d be good at—but honestly, now I kind of want my own board. Not sure my neighbors would appreciate it though.

What’s included

Your day includes a hands-on lesson with all safety gear (helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards), use of a Onewheel GT hoverboard or an electric scooter if you prefer, plus a backpack for essentials. You’ll get photos taken by your guide at different spots along San Diego’s bayfront before returning to Liberty Station Park.
