Glide past the Hotel del Coronado instead of walking to it

A 3-hour Segway tour through San Diego's downtown, waterfront and Coronado Island, starting in the Gaslamp Quarter with a 30-minute orientation and a guide narrating the route. You ride through downtown, along the Embarcadero with views of San Diego Bay, then take a ferry to Coronado to see Coronado Beach and the historic Hotel del Coronado before returning by water. The Segway covers ground a walking tour cannot, and the ferry ride is included.

  • Ride ferry to Coronado Island
  • Visit Hotel Del Coronado
  • Visit Coronado Beach
  • Return ferry to San Diego

The Experience

You meet in the Gaslamp Quarter, the 16-block historic heart of downtown San Diego filled with Victorian architecture, museums, restaurants and Petco Park. After a 30-minute safety briefing and orientation on the Segway, you're ready to ride. The guide leads you through downtown, then toward the Embarcadero, where the waterfront opens up and you get unobstructed views of San Diego Bay. The Segway does the work of covering distance, so you see more without the fatigue of walking.

At the Embarcadero dock, you board a ferry for the round-trip crossing to Coronado Island. The ferry itself is part of the tour—the crossing offers views of the city from the water, and shops and restaurants line the shoreline as you arrive. Once on Coronado, you ride past Coronado Beach, popular with surfers and sunbathers, with its silvery sand and backdrop of historic homes. The Hotel del Coronado, a 130-year-old National Historic Landmark with distinctive red Victorian architecture, is the centerpiece stop. After exploring Coronado by Segway, you return to downtown by ferry.

The tour operates rain or shine. Bottled water and small snacks are provided. You'll need a decent level of fitness and the ability to climb stairs without assistance; the minimum age is 10, and riders under 16 must have a parent present. The weight limit is 250 lbs. A guide narrates throughout in English or Spanish, depending on which tour time you choose.

Top questions

Can I take this Segway tour if I've never ridden one before?

Yes. The tour includes a 30-minute safety briefing and orientation where you learn how to ride the Segway before the group departs, so no prior experience is necessary.

What is the Hotel del Coronado and why is it famous?

The Hotel del Coronado is a historic building with bright red Victorian architecture that has overlooked Coronado Beach for 130 years. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977 and is known for hosting many celebrities and US presidents.

Do I need to arrange my own transportation to the meeting point?

The tour meets in the Gaslamp Quarter downtown. Lyft and Uber are the preferred way to reach the meeting location; the operator is listed on ride-share apps as "Another Side Of San Diego Tours." Parking lots are also available nearby if you drive.

Is the ferry ride included in the tour price?

Yes. The round-trip San Diego Bay ferry ride to and from Coronado Island is included in the tour, along with the Segway rental, safety equipment, orientation and guide narration.

How much ground does this tour cover compared to walking?

The Segway allows you to cover much more distance than you would on foot in the same time, so you see downtown San Diego, the Embarcadero, and Coronado Island in a single 3-hour tour without the fatigue of walking.

What should I know about the age and fitness requirements?

The minimum age is 10 years old. Riders aged 10 to 15 must have a parent present to sign a waiver and accompany them; riders 16 to 17 need a parent to sign the waiver but can ride independently. You must have a decent level of fitness and be able to climb stairs without assistance. The weight limit is 250 lbs, and pregnant women cannot participate.
