The Experience
Sunlight bounced off the yellow GoCar as we rolled into Little Italy. The air smelled faintly of espresso drifting from Café Zucchero—locals were already lining up for cannoli. Our GPS guide chimed in with stories about the old fishing families who built this neighborhood. I caught a mural tucked behind a bakery, easy to miss if you’re not looking. It’s these little details that make the ride feel personal.
We zipped past the Maritime Museum—couldn’t help but slow down for a peek at the Star of India’s tall masts. The USS Midway loomed ahead, gray and massive against the blue sky. You can almost hear the gulls squabbling overhead as you cruise by. Down near Seaport Village, street performers were setting up; one guy was tuning his guitar right by the water’s edge. The breeze picked up here, carrying a salty tang from the bay.
Gaslamp Quarter was next—colorful banners flapped above us and you could spot Padres fans heading toward Petco Park with jerseys slung over their shoulders. Our guide pointed out some old brick buildings that survived the area’s wild past (he joked about “the less family-friendly days”). Banker’s Hill came last, with quirky shops and leafy streets bordering Balboa Park. We parked for a quick photo under a jacaranda tree before heading back.
