After Seaport Village the route loops you through downtown proper, past Petco Park where the Padres play, and then into the Historic Gaslamp Quarter — the part of San Diego that's been cleaned up enough that families actually want to walk around now instead of just passing through. You're moving at a pace where you can take it in without feeling rushed, and because you're on a scooter instead of a bus, you're actually part of the street instead of watching it through a window. The GPS keeps you on track, so you don't have to think about navigation; you just ride and look around. On the way out of Gaslamp you'll head into Banker's Hill with its quirky shops, and the route brushes up against Balboa Park, which sits there like a green lung in the middle of the city.

You need to be at least 15 — under 18 and an adult has to come along — and you've got to weigh between 100 and 375 pounds for the scooter to work right. There's a $150 authorization hold on your card (it doesn't get charged, just held), and you'll need a photo ID and a major credit card to rent.
