The Experience
“You’ve got five minutes left!” our guide called out, and suddenly we were scrambling—hands brushing over cool stone walls, searching for clues in the dim glow of torchlight. The air inside the tomb felt heavy, like it hadn’t moved in centuries. Somewhere behind us, a mechanical hiss signaled another trap resetting. I caught a faint scent of incense mixed with dust—probably pumped in to set the mood, but it worked. We were deep in this Mayan temple escape room, and every second counted.
Our group had split up: two of us deciphering strange glyphs carved into the wall, while the others tried to unlock a chest that rattled when you shook it. The puzzles weren’t just locks and codes; some needed teamwork—one person holding down a lever while another reached into a hidden compartment. At one point, we all jumped when something slithered past our feet (fake snake, thankfully). The whole place was packed with life-sized props and clever lighting that made shadows dance across the floor.
