The experience

The drive from Boston to Gloucester runs about an hour, split between highway and scenic back roads that start revealing the coastline before you arrive. At the Gloucester visitor center, you'll walk out onto the rocks for views across the bay, then continue to the Fisherman's Memorial: a short walk worth taking for the vantage it gives you over the water and the story behind it. From there, the route turns inland briefly through back roads before the North Shore opens up again as you approach Rockport, stopping along the way for some of the best rocky coastline in the Northeast.

Rockport itself is a working harbor town with artsy shops to browse and views to admire from the water's edge. After an hour or so there, it's a 30-minute drive south to Salem, where you'll take a short walking tour around the historic sites tied to the 1692 witch trials, including the Bewitched Statue, and the town's role in that chapter of American history. The day ends with a scenic drive back through Cape Ann and the 60-minute return to downtown Boston, with stops along the way for the last of the ocean views.

The itinerary stays flexible so you can adjust the time spent at each stop based on what interests you most. Lunch is on your own, giving you the freedom to eat where and when suits the day's rhythm. The whole tour runs six hours from pickup to drop-off.
