Step-by-step itinerary
Sunset and stargazing in Rocky Mountain
- Get acquainted with night sky
- Stargaze at highest National Park
The experience
The tour starts as daylight lingers on the alpine tundra and builds toward full darkness. You travel above the treeline to viewpoints that most park visitors never reach, trading the crowded lower elevations for the sweeping vistas and thin air of the high country. As the sun dips behind the peaks and the sky shifts from gold to deep blue, the stars begin to emerge, and by the time full night arrives, the Milky Way dominates the sky overhead.
A world-traveling astronomer leads the evening and brings a telescope so you can see detail in the constellations and deep-sky objects that are invisible to the naked eye. The astronomer speaks English and works through the night sky as it actually appears that evening, not from a script. You'll spend time getting oriented to what you're looking at early on, then move into deeper stargazing as the night deepens and your eyes adjust to the dark.
The tour runs 4 hours total, which means you can fit it into an evening without losing the whole day to preparation or travel back down the mountain. A sandwich box and beverage are included, so you're not hunting for food at altitude. Service animals are welcome, and public transportation options exist nearby if you're not driving your own vehicle to the park.
What’s included
- A sandwich box and beverage.
- telescope access with the astronomer's guidance.
- a live English-speaking guide for the full 4-hour evening.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 12 years). Children under 4 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Milky Way like when you see it from Rocky Mountain National Park?
The Milky Way is visible as a dense band of stars stretching across the sky, brightest and most detailed from the high alpine viewpoints above the treeline where the tour operates. The astronomer will point out its structure and the deep-sky objects within it using the telescope.
Can I bring my four-year-old on this tour?
Children from age 4 are welcome. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller if you have one, though the high-altitude terrain and darkness may make that impractical. Check with the operator about what works best for your child's age and comfort.
Do I need to bring my own telescope or binoculars?
No. The tour includes access to a telescope operated by the astronomer, so you can look through it at the night sky. You don't need to bring your own equipment.
