The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the sound — that dry crunch of gravel under my sneakers as we got off the shuttle from Las Vegas. The air out here at Red Rock Canyon smells different, almost dusty-sweet, like sunbaked sagebrush. Our guide, Mike, handed me a helmet and grinned. “You ever ridden one of these?” he asked, nodding at the row of scooters. I shrugged — bikes yes, scooters not so much. But after a quick lesson (and some nervous laughter), it wasn’t half as hard as I’d worried.
We set off in single file along the 13-mile loop, engines humming low against those wild red cliffs. The road is wide and one-way — which helped me relax after the first couple turns. Mike kept up this steady stream of stories about how these rocks formed and pointed out a spot where bighorn sheep sometimes appear (none today, but honestly I was too busy watching my own handlebars to notice much wildlife). There’s something weirdly freeing about cruising past all that ancient stone with nothing but desert wind on your face. At one stop, I tried to pronounce “caliche” like Mike did — Li laughed when I butchered it in front of everyone.
We stopped for photos more than once; nobody rushed us. The sun kept shifting over those striped cliffs and it’s hard to describe how big everything feels out there. Bottled water never tasted so good as when you’re standing in that heat with your helmet hair going wild. By the end, my hands were buzzing from holding the throttle — but in a good way. I still think about that view coming around the last bend: just endless sky and rock and this feeling that you’re somewhere far from slot machines and neon.
