The experience
The day starts before dawn in Phoenix-Scottsdale and heads north through Flagstaff, where you pass the San Francisco Peaks (the eroded remains of a stratovolcano and Arizona's highest point), and drive through Coconino National Forest, the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in the country. A section of Route 66 runs through this stretch. You'll stop for a restroom break and then continue to Cameron, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation, where you have time to eat lunch, shop at the Cameron Trading Post and look out over the Little Colorado River Gorge before heading into the park.
Once at Grand Canyon National Park, your guide drives the 26-mile South Rim route with you for up to 3½ hours, stopping at multiple viewpoints. The route runs from Desert View, home to the historic Watchtower, west to Grand Canyon Village, where you see the El Tovar Hotel and Hopi House. Throughout the drive, the guide points out wildlife (mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds, including endangered raptors), answers your questions and takes photos of you at the rim with your own camera. You get multiple chances to step out and shoot, including what the operator calls "fantastic selfie moments."
The return to Phoenix includes a fast food dinner and restroom stop in Camp Verde. Hotel pickup and drop-off in the Phoenix-Scottsdale area are included, as are bottled water and all National Park fees. The tour runs 13 hours total. Minimum age is 13. The operator notes it's not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health, though it suits all fitness levels.
