The experience

The hike starts near the trailhead in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, where your guide meets you before dawn. You'll trek through a wide canyon of giant granite and quartz boulders, then climb switchbacks to two mountain saddles and push to a peak. The payoff is a view of the Valley of the Sun, Metro Phoenix and desert mountain ranges stretching more than 40 miles away: all lit by the Arizona sunrise. Your guide knows the terrain and will adjust the route to match your pace and the difficulty you're comfortable with.

The Sonoran Desert is the most diverse desert in North America, and the hike lets you see why: the geology, plants and wildlife change as you gain elevation. Your guide points out what most visitors miss. At the viewpoint, you stop to rest, take in the view and eat trail snacks and drink cold beverages before heading back down. The whole outing takes two hours.
