The experience

Three to four hours on the Historic Columbia River Highway, the first scenic highway built in America, inspired by the Axenstrasse in the Swiss Alps. Your guide drives you along the western, rainforested segment of the Gorge, called "waterfall alley", where the Sandy River runs parallel, fed by glaciers on Mt. Hood. The route passes through an old logging ghost town from the 1880s that still operates a post office and runs a bed-and-breakfast.

You stop at Vista House, a 100-year-old sandstone, limestone and marble building perched on a basalt point with a 360-degree balcony and views down the Columbia River. From there, short walks lead to Latourell Falls (a 249-foot hanging waterfall with fluorescent lichen and columnar basalt), Wahkeena Falls (a switchback trail through hemlock and Douglas fir to a bridge at the base), and Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon at 620 feet combined height. The route also includes Oneonta Gorge, a slot canyon created by a fault with plants that grow nowhere else, and a chance to get wet under a waterfall.

The vehicle is air-conditioned with a PA system so everyone can hear the guide from the back. Bottled water and snacks are included, along with gratuities. Pickup is included in the booking.

Is this one for you? This is a private tour, so your group travels alone with the guide and sets the pace at each stop: ideal if you want to linger at a waterfall or move through quickly without coordinating with other travelers. The vehicle and route are set, so you're not navigating yourself, but you're not rushed through a fixed schedule either.

Top questions

How many waterfalls do we actually stop at and walk to on this tour?

Four major waterfalls: Multnomah Falls (Oregon's tallest at 620 feet), Wahkeena Falls (reached by a short switchback trail), Latourell Falls (a 249-foot hanging waterfall), and Oneonta Gorge (a slot canyon where you can get wet under water). You also stop at Vista House for views and photos.

What is Oneonta Gorge and why is it worth the stop?

Oneonta Gorge is a slot canyon created by a fault line, with plants growing on the walls that are found nowhere else in the world. It's one of the stops where you get wet, and it offers unusual photo opportunities.

Is this tour private, or will I be sharing the vehicle with other travelers?

This is a private tour, so your group travels alone in the air-conditioned vehicle with your guide.

What was the Historic Columbia River Highway, and why does the tour drive it?

The Historic Columbia River Highway is a 74-mile scenic route built in the early 1900s and was America's first scenic highway. It was inspired by the Axenstrasse in the Swiss Alps. The tour covers the western 74-mile segment, which runs through the rainforested side of the Gorge and passes most of the major waterfalls.

Do I need to be fit or experienced to do the walks to the waterfalls?

The walks are short and suitable for all physical fitness levels. Latourell Falls is a short walk from the vehicle, Wahkeena Falls involves a short switchback trail through forest, and Oneonta Gorge is accessible to most visitors. The tour is designed to be manageable for a wide range of abilities.
