The Experience
I’ll be honest — I almost bailed when my shoelace snapped right as we pulled up to the Jeep. But our guide, Tom (forty years in these canyons, apparently), just grinned and handed me a spare from his glovebox. “Happens all the time,” he said. That set the tone: nothing too precious, just people who know this place inside out. The Jeep rumbled over those coral pink dunes like it was born for it, windows down so the air smelled like hot sand and sagebrush. I didn’t expect how quiet it gets out there — just wind, tires crunching, Tom’s stories about the old days.
Walking into Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon felt like stepping into another planet. The walls really do glow that deep red, especially when the sun’s low — and you can run your hands along stone that’s older than anything I’ve ever touched. We stopped where you could see little fossil shells pressed into the rock (Tom called them “the ocean’s leftovers”), and he pointed out these tiny moki steps chipped by ancient hands. I tried to imagine climbing them but honestly? No way. There were petroglyphs too — faded but still there if you squint — and Tom told us what some of them meant, or at least what folks think they mean.
I kept lagging behind to take photos, but after a while I just put my phone away because it felt better to look than to snap. The light shifted every few minutes — one second gold, then suddenly cool and blue in the shadows. At one point someone in our group tried to pronounce “Kanab” properly and Tom laughed so hard he nearly dropped his water bottle. It was all pretty casual; nobody rushed us or made us feel like tourists ticking boxes.
