The Experience
"Most people think they're going to be terrified," the flight instructor said while fitting my harness, "but once you're up there, you just smile." And he was right — the moment the wind tunnel hit full speed and my feet left the ground, there was nothing left to think about. iFLY Paramus sits just outside Newark in a converted warehouse space, and inside is an 800-horsepower vertical wind tunnel that does something most of us will never do any other way: it lets you experience freefall. Two separate 60-second flights, one-on-one with a certified instructor, wind speeds hitting 130 to 175 mph — the whole thing wrapped up in 75 minutes from the moment you walk in.
The first 20 minutes or so is training. You learn body position, hand signals, how to stay stable in the column of air. The instructor walks you through it all on the ground before you suit up — goggles, helmet, jumpsuit, the works. Then you step into the chamber. The tunnel operator brings the wind speed up gradually, and at some point you stop feeling your own weight. Your instructor is right there with you, holding your arm, adjusting your position, making sure you're floating steady. The sensation isn't like falling; it's more like being held up by something invisible. After 60 seconds it's over, and you walk out, and then you do it again.
No skydiving experience required, and the age range is wide — minimum 3 years old, though you need to be at least 40 inches tall and in moderate physical fitness. Weight limits do apply: iFLY can't accommodate anyone over 300 pounds, and those between 260 and 300 will need staff evaluation on the day. If you've had recent neck, back, shoulder or heart issues, or if you're pregnant, you won't be able to fly. The facility is strict about this for good reason — the wind speeds are real, and the safety margins are tight. Wear lace-up sneakers and comfortable clothes; nothing loose that could catch the wind.
You leave with a personalized flight certificate, all gear provided, taxes and fees already built in. The whole experience is self-contained — no jumping out of anything, no altitude, no parachute. Just you, an instructor, and the physics of a controlled column of air doing what skydivers train for years to feel.
