Oahu Dolphin Tour: West Coast small group, 16 guests max
See dolphins from the boat, snorkel with turtles if conditions allow
You board a small, slow boat off Oahu's west coast with a marine biologist crew and up to 15 other people, searching for dolphins and whales along the Waianae. Snorkeling with sea turtles is included if conditions allow. You get lunch, all gear, and a dolphin sighting guarantee — if none appear, you return free. Hotel pickup is available on the 7am departure only; the 10:30am departure meets at the harbor.
Step-by-step itinerary
Dolphin watching and snorkeling tour
- Depart from Waianae Boat Harbor
- Travel along west coast of Oahu
- Search for dolphins and marine wildlife
- Observe dolphins from the boat
- Attempt underwater dolphin viewing if possible
- Snorkel at sites with sea turtles and fish
- Spot humpback whales during winter months
The Experience
That's the bet on a 32-foot boat that sits low enough in the water that when dolphins show up, they're not a distant shape on the horizon — they're right there. The west coast of Oahu, along the Waianae, is where the crew finds them most reliably. You leave from Waianae Boat Harbor either at 7am (with hotel pickup included) or 10:30am (meet at the harbor), and for the next three hours you're moving slowly through water where multiple species of dolphins live year-round, plus humpback whales in winter. The boat holds only 16 people, which means no fighting for a view and no sense of being herded through someone else's experience.
The crew are lifeguard-certified marine biologists and naturalists who've spent decades on this coast, and they're honest about what's possible. You will see dolphins from the boat — that's guaranteed, and if you don't, you come back free. What's not guaranteed is getting in the water near them, because that depends on how the animals behave and what the conditions allow. But if things line up, you'll snorkel at spots where sea turtles and tropical fish are more predictable, and the crew will try to position you for an underwater view of dolphins too. Winter months bring humpback whales on almost every tour, which changes the whole rhythm of the day.
Snorkel gear is provided — mask (prescription available if you ask ahead), snorkel, fins, and a life vest — and the boat carries a deli lunch with a sandwich and chips, plus coolers of non-alcoholic drinks you can reach anytime. The whole operation follows federal wildlife protection guidelines, so you're not chasing animals or stressing them out; you're observing them the way the law says you should. It's a small detail, but it matters when you're trying to photograph something wild.

Is this one for you?Right for travelers who want to see wild dolphins without the crowds and don't mind that the experience depends partly on animal behavior — the small group size and low-profile boat are what make close encounters possible, and the guarantee means you're not gambling on a single departure.

What's included in the lunch?
A deli-style sandwich, chips, and assorted non-alcoholic beverages in a cooler on the boat.
Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?
No. Mask, snorkel, fins, and life vest are provided. Prescription masks are available if you request one.
Which departure time includes hotel pickup?

Will I see humpback whales?
Only during winter months (January to March), when they're seen on almost every tour on the Waianae Coast.
How many people are on the boat?
Maximum 16 guests, so every seat has a good view and the boat stays uncrowded.
Is this tour suitable for young children?
Children under 4 years old are not allowed. Older children are welcome if they're comfortable in the water.
What if the weather is bad?
Snorkeling is included as long as weather permits. The crew will assess conditions and adjust the itinerary if needed.
