The Experience
The experience starts with a short shuttle ride out to the submarine from Waikiki's coast, passing Diamond Head on the way. Once aboard the 64-passenger vessel, you descend below the surface for approximately 45 minutes. The submarine is quiet and battery-powered, so the marine life around you stays undisturbed—Hawaiian fish, sea turtles and coral move naturally while you watch from your seat. The cabin stays air-conditioned and dry the entire time, and the large viewing portals give you a direct line to what's happening outside.
The dive site itself is a mix of natural reef and artificial structures: sunken ships, airplane parts and other objects that have become habitat over time. A live guide narrates in English as you move through the site, explaining what species you're seeing and the history of the structures. Pre-recorded audio is available in Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese if you prefer. The whole outing—shuttle, dive and return—takes about two hours from start to finish.
Children as young as three feet tall can ride, and there's no fitness requirement beyond being able to climb a near-vertical ladder to board. Infants and small children can stay in a stroller during the shuttle portion. You'll choose your departure time at checkout; options run from 9am through 2pm, so you can fit the dive into your day however it works best.
