The Experience

I didn’t expect St. Paul’s Chapel to feel so…quiet. It’s right there in Lower Manhattan, but when we stepped inside at the start of our private 9/11 tour, it was almost like the city sounds got muffled. Our guide—Mike, born and raised in Queens—pointed out scuffed pews where rescue workers once napped and showed us a faded firefighter’s jacket left behind. He told us how this old church became a kind of anchor for everyone after the attacks. I caught a whiff of candle wax and something woody—maybe old hymnals? Felt heavier than I thought it would.

We walked over to the 9/11 Memorial next, passing people with coffee cups and school kids on field trips. The “Reflecting Absence” pools are bigger than they look in photos—water just disappears into these huge square voids where the towers stood. Mike paused by the Survivor Tree and told us about its rescue (I’d never heard that story). There was this moment where nobody said anything; just water sounds and wind moving through names carved in bronze. I found myself tracing one with my finger without really thinking about it.

The museum part was self-guided, which honestly I liked—I could move at my own pace and didn’t have to talk if I didn’t want to. Some artifacts hit harder than others: a melted phone, hand-written notes behind glass. At one point I just sat on a bench for a while because it all felt like a lot. Afterward, we regrouped for Freedom Tower (which everyone calls One World now). The SkyPod elevator shot up so fast my ears popped; Mike joked that he still gets dizzy every time.

The view from One World Observatory is wild—you can see the whole city grid stretching out below you. There were families taking selfies and someone FaceTiming their grandma (“Look! We’re on top of New York!”). I’m not sure what I expected from this day trip to Ground Zero, but parts of it stuck with me more than I thought they would—especially that quiet moment at St. Paul’s Chapel before everything else started.
