The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how the city looked through those big bus windows—like watching a movie, but you’re in it. We rolled down Sixth Avenue past Radio City, and our guide (Tony, born-and-raised Queens) kept tossing out stories about the Rockettes and Jimmy Fallon’s studio that made me laugh. I caught myself craning my neck for a glimpse of the Empire State Building between buildings. The bus felt almost too comfortable for New York—soft seats, air conditioning humming quietly, which is not what I expected. Outside, yellow cabs darted around us like they were in some kind of race nobody else knew about.

Central Park was greener than I thought it’d be in late spring—smelled faintly of grass and roasted nuts from a vendor we passed. Tony pointed out Strawberry Fields and told us about John Lennon’s memorial; he paused for a second at the “Imagine” mosaic, and even though there were tourists everywhere, it felt weirdly peaceful. At Rockefeller Center we got off for photos (I may have taken too many). Some woman in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral tried to teach her kid to say “Neo-Gothic”—the kid just shouted “big church!” instead. That stuck with me for some reason.

Driving through SoHo and Chinatown was like flipping channels—suddenly cast-iron buildings, then lanterns and shopfronts with ducks hanging in the windows. Tony told us where to find the best dumplings if we came back later (I wrote it down but probably lost the note). Wall Street felt colder somehow—maybe just all that glass and stone. We stopped at Pier 17 for Brooklyn Bridge photos; wind off the East River nearly knocked my hat off, which Tony found hilarious.

The 9/11 Memorial hit harder than I expected. The sound of water in those huge pools drowned out everything else for a minute or two—I didn’t really talk much there. Then our timed entry tickets got us right up to One World Observatory without waiting around (thank god). Up top, New York looked endless—the kind of view that makes you feel tiny but sort of lucky to be here at all. I still think about that view sometimes when I hear sirens back home.
